June Astrocycles 2013

Joan Kiley Astrologer“And what is so rare as a day in June? Then, if ever, come perfect days” —from The Vision of Sir Launfal by James Russell Lowell. So, is that what we have to look forward to? “Perfect days” to bask in, during this lovely month of June? Well, yes…and no.

So, is that what we have to look forward to? “Perfect days” to bask in, during this lovely month of June? Well, yes…and no. There will be lots of water energy in which to bathe ourselves. And there are aspects of the water element that are soft, flowing, and dreamy. The personal planets will all be moving through Cancer, the sign of nurturing and sensitivity. Even Jupiter will begin its year-long sojourn through Cancer. Plus, the New Moon in Gemini may give us a boost of extraverted energy!

But perfect? That’s quite a high bar to set. And it would be quite a miscalculation to look only at the easier aspects of water. June starts with a Grand Trine in water signs: Saturn in Scorpio, Neptune in Pisces, and Mercury forming the third leg, just 1 degree into Cancer. All of these planets have shadowy sides, despite, and perhaps somewhat due, to their being in water signs.

We will no doubt be quite emotional during this water bath. (Floods in various parts of the world are a good metaphor for what could happen to us on an inner level) Mercury may have us thinking about our feelings (yes, that does happen), Neptune may have us fantasizing about our feelings, and Saturn will definitely have us trying to keep a lid on our feelings. By June 3, Venus joined Mercury in Cancer, so we have some sensitivity around our relationships and resources.

To further heighten the water intensity during these early June days is the slowing down and then stationing retrograde of Neptune. It occurs at 1:25 AM PDT on June 7. The moment of station is always a powerful one for any planet, and when such planet is in its own sign, it gives further emphasis to the archetype represented. Watch for illusion and confusion, but also inspiration and feelings of awe!

Good questions to ponder during this period might be: How can I maximize the level of deep connection between myself and others? How can I create healthier boundaries for protecting my own space and reducing/eliminating stress, while still communicating with truth and kindness? How can I stay present in my body, provide myself self-care, and simultaneously deepen my spiritual connections? Am I taking care of my responsibilities? Am I safe-guarding my resources?

Part of the reason this water trine will have us questioning ourselves is because the cardinal square between Pluto and Uranus is still intensely close and active in our psyches. Our old patterns are being questioned; new parts of ourselves are wanting to break free and manifest. By June 5, this square becomes a T-square with Mercury opposing Pluto and squaring Uranus. It is part of the times we live in that the synchronicity of having a water trine plus the cardinal tension, gives us the opportunity to put deep conscious attention on our soul’s journey at just this moment. Do take advantage of such a gift. Your evolution depends on it.

This Grand Trine will re-occur throughout the month as other planets move through the early degrees of Cancer. Mercury will remain in Cancer throughout the month of June, and July as well, because of its second retrograde period of the year starting late in June.

The second week of June starts with a New Moon at 18 degrees Gemini on June 8, at 8:56 AM PDT. At the time, there is still our lovely grand trine in water, between Venus in Cancer, Saturn in Scorpio, and Neptune in Pisces. There’s also the Cardinal T-square with Pluto in Capricorn opposed Venus AND Mercury in Cancer and all squared Uranus in Aries. Two days later, the Moon has moved into Cancer and joins the T-square, giving it even more of an emotional charge! You may be pulled toward social activities, but if at all possible give yourself some time alone. Try not to take things personally, and ponder your emotional responses carefully.

By June 11, Mercury starts to move out of orb of the T-square, but Venus remains until about the 15th. On the 14th, the Moon moves into Virgo, and between the 14th and 15th will oppose Neptune and Chiron. This could make it a bit more difficult to focus your mind, but easier to be with the wisdom of your heart. Be gentle with yourself. You are preparing to release what’s been holding you back from your next step forward.

On June 17th, the Moon in Libra becomes part of the cardinal T-square, and we are once again emotionally challenged to find and take the next step on our own unique path. The Sun and Jupiter are conjunct in the final degrees of Gemini, providing you the support of great faith in yourself.

These “rare” June days, I’m sure you’ve been noticing, get longer and longer, as we move closer to the Summer Solstice! And then on June 20th, the Sun slips quietly into Cancer at 10:10 PM PDT. This official start of summer in the northern hemisphere occurs when the Sun is at its furthest point from the equator, and directly over the Tropic of Cancer. The June solstice has the longest hours of daylight for those living north of the equator. In fact, if you live at the Arctic Circle you are able to view the “midnight sun” all through the night! This day has long been the occasion of celebrations of Midsummer, particularly in Europe, with some festivities in the United States and Canada as well.

With the Sun now in Cancer, the Water Grand Trine comes back into focus for the next week, in strong emphasis for the Full Moon at 2 degrees Capricorn on June 23 at 4:32 AM PDT. The Capricorn Moon is a bit shy of conjunction to Pluto, but the Capricorn energy will nevertheless be in play. Cancer/Capricorn—archetypes most strongly associated with home, security, authority, parental polarities, yet also intensely associated with cultural conditioning and the collective. With the Full Moon opposition connected to the Water Trine via a configuration called a Kite, we’ll be attuned to our psychic and spiritual visions for the future and feel we have the capacity to ground those visions in practical reality.

The structures in the world around us are crumbling. Financial, political and environmental emergencies demand our attention. The state of our world has a vast array of consequences, ranging from great suffering to extraordinary fulfillment of potential! Between the Gemini New Moon and the Capricorn Full Moon, much information has been “downloading” into our minds/hearts. This information includes ideas, visions, and inspiration to build a better world. It also includes fear, resentment, and a sense of loss. At the Full Moon, it is time to determine what is your own unique response. Talk it over with people you trust. Listen to your own heart.

The final week of June brings more movement. Jupiter moves into Cancer, the sign of its exaltation, at 6:40 PM on June 25th to stay for a year. We may not feel this change in our personal intimate lives, unless of course you have planets in early Cancer. Nevertheless there will be a supportive energy for everyone, in whatever house you have the sign. Look for opportunities and expansion in the areas of life represented by that house. In addition, Jupiter will bring more energy for the water trine in the next few months.

On June 26th, Mercury stations retrograde at 6:08 AM PDT at 23 degrees Cancer. It will remain retrograde until the 20th of July, and in its shadow until early August. Cancer is a tricky place for Mercury. Mercury is an air planet, which is all about thinking and talking. Cancer is a water sign that prefers feeling, intuiting, and sometimes communicating non-verbally. Unless you can be patient and flexible in your dealings with others during this period, miscommunications could result. Listen carefully, and assess, with as much clarity as possible, what you and others are really trying to say to one another. Be willing to trust your emotional wisdom.

June 27th finds Venus moving into Leo, which lets us know summer has truly begun! It’s time for friendly gatherings: family reunions, parties at the lake, and visits with grandparents. Love is in the air, romantic and familial and friendship! Yippee!

Okay, this is all sounding a bit too pretty, isn’t it? Well, a square with Saturn will bring us all down to earth. And during the last days of June, sure enough, Venus is in a growing square with the old fella. Meanwhile the Sun is in strong opposition with Pluto, which is in Capricorn, Saturn’s sign. This may take a bit of the easiness out of the final days of the month, but that’s not saying those days won’t still be “rare.”

We will need to utilize that retrograde Mercury, and listen to the heart. Meanwhile we must bravely, carefully, but openly, move toward relationship, and working with others in practical ways to accomplish big things! THAT is summertime action going forward!

See you in July!
