We've just come through the first 8 months of 2012 laden with astrological events. First, there was the string of retrogrades – Mars, then Venus, punctuated by Mercury retrograde in Leo. The retrograde energy only just lifted around August 22nd, as Mercury emerged from its post-retro shadow. We also had a summer rife with some rather momentous events – the first exact Uranus-Pluto square in June, the eclipses of late May and early June, the Venus-transit-across-the-Sun in June, AND the "Cardinal Cross" lineup of Mars in Libra, Uranus in Aries, the Sun in Cancer, and the Moon and Pluto in Capricorn in early July.
The month of July was indeed challenging for me, particularly in the areas of family (Cancer) and career (Capricorn). My experiencing of it was that I got put through the wringer during those two months, but then August felt like a time to catch my breath a bit, collect myself, and get ready to forge ahead. I feel like I'm finally able to move forward on some things that have been all stop-and-start since the beginning of the year.
As I look ahead at September, however, I honestly make my moving-ahead plans a bit warily. (The quote about making God laugh by telling him your plans comes to mind.) This month is full of astrological events that hook into the Uranus-Pluto square energy. The second exact Uranus-Pluto square occurs on September 19th, just two days after Pluto stations direct. The Fall Equinox on the 22nd places the Sun and Mercury in early Libra squaring Pluto and opposing Uranus. And the Full Moon in Aries at the end of the month features the Moon itself in a conjunction to Uranus and squaring Pluto, placing the ongoing Uranus-Pluto square literally in the spotlight – the Full Moon is shining on it. The themes of Pluto (transformation, endings, new beginnings, breakdown) and Uranus (surprising events, chaos, shakeups, breakthroughs) are ripe this month.
The Plutonian themes are underscored, though, as the transiting Nodes have just shifted into Scorpio/Taurus (August 30th). Pluto rules the sign of Scorpio, where the North Node now resides. The Nodes, also referred to as the "Head" (North Node) and "Tail" (South Node) of the dragon, shift signs about every 1 1/2 years moving backwards through the zodiac. The transiting nodes, for the collective, have to do with the lessons that we are challenged to take in (North Node) and the shadow material we are challenged to release (South Node). With the transiting North Node in Scorpio, we're being invited to confront our fears, and to let go of the things we've held on to – habits, ideas, material things – that makes us feel secure. And, that's the South Node in Taurus: we are learning to release attachment to some things that have allowed us to be comfortable for a while. The evolutionary condition is that, as a whole, we have become too comfortable, cozy, sleepy. Inertia has set in (shadow side of Taurus). Scorpio medicine invites us to surrender to what feels out of our control. For example, intense emotions, maybe long suppressed, may be coming to the surface now. Or, you might find that you can no longer avoid doing that thing you are passionate about, but have been so afraid to do. If you don't know what that is yet, don't worry. Another year and a half of North Node in Scorpio will likely reveal it to you. But you must be willing to look beneath the surface of things, to confront fears, and to ride the wave rather of change rather than fighting it.
Pluto (Scorpio's ruler) in its prominent square to Uranus, and the North Node in Scorpio, both bring forward a heightened awareness of the need for these Scorpionic strategies over the next year and a half in particular. In October's Newsletter, I'll be going deeper into Scorpio, as Saturn enters that sign on October 6th. Stay tuned!
