Astrology News

by Joan Kiley

Joan Kiley Astrologer August is traditionally the month for vacation, relaxation and recreation. All good ideas! But while you're at it this year, stay aware of your surroundings, inner and outer. Don't let this be a month for not attending to personal matters. Rather, with Mercury retrograde in Virgo, look at personal commitments and routines, see what needs clearing, and take time for you.

The early days of August provide lots of changes. The royal Leo Sun and its companion Venus in Leo begin the month with a stimulating trine to Uranus retrograde, increasing excitement as well as anxiety over finances. The debt ceiling issue looms, but real solutions for real people seem remote for now.

Meanwhile the quincunx between Venus and Pluto tells us that there may be need for some adjustments in our relationships. Since you may not be seeing eye-to-eye, try to get understanding of where others (and yourself) are coming from rather than slip unconsciously into arguments or assumptions. This is doubly true with Mercury Retrograde.

Mercury Retrograde

Mercury turns retrograde August 2 and will remain so until August 27. During first days of retrograde motion, it opposes Neptune, making our communications and transportation issues particularly tricky. Try to be clear in your own communications, since misunderstandings are likely if you don't stay on top of things and become careless. Double-check all transportation plans so all bases are covered. Don't be surprised by delays.

Mercury retrograde will re-enter Leo on August 8th, highlighting our desire to be helpful (and get a little attention doing it) but with an opposition to Neptune, be a bit cautious. Don't make promises you can't keep.

Mars in Cancer

On August 3rd Mars enters Cancer and forms a trine to Neptune. This will be frustrating for Mars, whose nature is more straightforward and direct. Neither is true of subjective Neptune and Cancer.

Just as Mars enters Cancer it forms a T-square aspect with Pluto (retrograde) in Capricorn and Uranus (retrograde) in Aries. This sets some sparks flying and increases volatility. Be careful of Mars ego, and take your time responding or making decisions, expecially if you feel ready to fly off the handle. Try compromise and patience instead, even if it's hard to do so.

Mars in Cancer requires us to be concerned not only with our own needs for security but others as well. Mars' trine to Neptune suggests that we may be a bit confused as to what that means. Old ideas are unlikely to ring true. Check in with the voice of your heart, read a bit of poetry, and pay attention to what wants to emerge into consciousness.

On August 9th, Mars will be in tight square to Uranus, igniting frustrations about how fast things are moving. Be aware that this is just frustration in your mind, not something to allow yourself to get attached to, or you might find yourself accident-prone. Don't take irritations personally. If possible, shift to compassion mode, and instead make a conscious act of kindness.

Practicing this detachment from irritations will hold you in good stead on August 11th when the cardinal T-square is at a peak, with Mars opposing Pluto and in a waning square with Uranus. This is a time to be particularly conscious of your surroundings, and unwilling to be pulled into arguments. If working with others, try to find areas of compromise, for the energy of transformation is operating. Though tension is high, it may be just the condition for transforming relationships with friends, co-workers, and family.

This cardinal T-square may be a trigger for violence or military action in the world. Power struggles abound, and we can only control our own actions and attitudes.

Neptune in Aquarius

On August 4th Neptune retrograde re-enters Aquarius for the final stretch of time before entering Pisces early next year. During the next 6 months we'll see more changes in technology. It's time to ask ourselves, "What part of our "tech time" is really of benefit, and what part an illusion?"

Full Moon in Aquarius

The Full Moon in Aquarius occurs on August 13, at 11:56 AM PDT. Venus is companioned with the Leo Sun and begs to experience the beauty and friendship of relations, so indulge it. The Aquarius Moon will be somewhat more detached and free-wheeling, but a group outing or get-together could be a great way to have it all.

By August 20th Mars will ease out of the intensity of the cardinal T-square, and move toward a square with Saturn. We must learn discipline in order to find success, working through the frustration of limitations that occur.

The Mars/Saturn square becomes exact on August 24, but by then the Sun will have entered Virgo and the Moon will be in Cancer, lending nurturing support to Mars. Mars will also be in positive aspect to Jupiter. You may begin to feel exuberant about all that you can accomplish. The difficulties Venus encounters that day with Chiron and Uranus, however, may not bode well for financial deals so steer clear of any big investments or financial decisions.

New Moon in Virgo

The New Moon in Virgo on August 28 at 8:04 PM PDT forms a Grand Trine with Pluto in Capricorn and Jupiter in Taurus. The Earthy trine will enliven our love for the earth, and our ripened gardens. This is a good day for envisioning solid goals, and injecting frugality into your budget.

Jupiter will turn retrograde in Taurus on August 31, and caution says be responsible, go step by step, and evaluate carefully. Jupiter will remain retrograde through the end of the year.

Don't be surprised if you feel a bit overwhelmed, exhausted or scattered by the end of the month. Whether you are aware of it or not, change is occurring, inside you and in your world. The energy is high, and so are the stakes. The good news is we're in it together and Neptune in Aquarius says we can realize that.
